You don’t need more time. You need fewer priorities and a system that protects them.
Most of us lose hours a day to phones, TV and news. Check your phone’s screen-time report: the number is usually higher than you expect. Multiply it by 365 and that’s the budget you could be building with.
After 40, with a job, a family and less runway, “I don’t have time” usually means “I haven’t decided what matters”. I’m Dave, I’m 50 with three daughters, and I’m a founding member of the Operator Standard. I built Simply Younger alongside everything else by protecting a small amount of time every day with a five-task Power List.
Key takeaways
- It’s usually a priority problem, not a time problem.
- Five tasks a day, not twenty. The constraint forces focus.
- One protected 90-minute block beats a day of fragments.
- The first hour belongs to you — see how to win the morning.
Do a time audit
Before you optimise, see where the time goes. Screen time, TV, aimless browsing. Write the weekly total down. Then decide whether that’s the return you want.
The Power List as a time tool
Most systems fail because they try to schedule everything. The Power List picks the five tasks that make today a win; everything else gets what’s left. Five is short enough to defend.
Deep work
Cal Newport’s idea of deep work is simple: focused, uninterrupted time on demanding work produces far more than scattered attention. Protect one 90-minute block a day — phone off, email closed, door shut. That’s roughly 550 hours a year.
