A note before we start. This is general information, not medical advice. WHOOP is a wellness wearable, not a substitute for your doctor. If your data shows something that worries you, such as a resting heart rate that stays high or an irregular rhythm, talk to your GP.
LifeWave X39 is a non-transdermal, general-wellness phototherapy patch that gently stimulates the skin with light to support the body’s natural energy flow for strength and stamina. It is not a treatment for any condition.
I’ve worn a WHOOP every day for years. In February I wrote about hitting 792 days straight. This week I exported my data: 1,054 days, from 30 November 2023 to today.
So when men ask me if it’s worth the money, I don’t give them the marketing answer. I give them this one.
Key takeaways
- WHOOP is a membership, not a gadget. The band is included; you pay yearly.
- In 2026 the three tiers are One ($199/year), Peak ($239/year) and Life ($359/year), in US dollars.
- All three give you the core: recovery, strain, sleep and HRV.
- It’s worth it if you train and will actually change your behaviour based on the data.
- It’s not worth it if you want a smartwatch, step counter or something to look at once a week.
How does WHOOP pricing work?
You don’t buy the band. You buy a membership, and the band comes with it. Stop paying and the app stops working.
- WHOOP One — $199/year. The entry tier. WHOOP 5.0 band. Full sleep, recovery and strain tracking.
- WHOOP Peak — $239/year. Same band, plus extras such as healthspan metrics (WHOOP Age and Pace of Aging) and the stress monitor.
- WHOOP Life — $359/year. The MG band, adding features such as blood pressure insights and the heart screener.
Those are US prices. In Ireland and the UK you’ll see local pricing at checkout, so check before you commit.
What do you actually get every day?
Every morning, one number: your recovery score. Green, yellow or red. It’s built mainly from your heart rate variability, resting heart rate and sleep. Then through the day it tracks strain — how hard your body worked — and overnight it tracks sleep.
No screen. No notifications. No step count. That’s the point. It’s a recovery coach on your wrist, not a phone.

Which tier should a man over 40 choose?
For most men: One or Peak. The data that actually changes behaviour — recovery, sleep, HRV, strain — is in every tier.
- Choose One if you want the core and nothing more.
- Choose Peak if you like longevity-style metrics such as WHOOP Age.
- Choose Life only if the extra heart and blood pressure features genuinely matter to you. It’s a big jump in price.
Who is WHOOP worth it for?
- Men who train regularly and want to know when to push and when to back off.
- Men who suspect their sleep is worse than they think.
- Men who drink and want to see what it really costs them.
- Men who respond to numbers. If you’re competitive with yourself, it works.
Who should skip it?
- If you want texts, maps and apps on your wrist, buy a smartwatch.
- If you won’t look at the data, don’t pay for it.
- If numbers make you anxious, it can backfire. Some people sleep worse worrying about their sleep score.
- If money’s tight, fix the free stuff first: sleep, steps, protein, less drink.
What has 1,054 days of data shown me?
- I sleep less than I thought. I average just under seven hours asleep, and only about half my nights reach seven. I’d have guessed more. See what 1,054 nights of sleep data taught me.
- Short nights wreck the next day. After nights under six hours, my recovery averages 43%. After seven to eight hours, 64%. That one number changed how I protect my sleep.
- I train by colour. I’m green 41% of days, yellow 48% and red 11%. Green, I push. Yellow, I train smart. Red, I walk, stretch and use the sauna. I lift every second day with the RP Hypertrophy app, and WHOOP decides how hard.
- It keeps me honest. I can’t lie to it. My numbers haven’t improved in a straight line, and the data shows the rough patches as clearly as the good ones.
I pair it with a monthly Hume Body Pod scan. WHOOP tells me how I’m recovering. Hume tells me whether I’m building muscle or adding fat. Together they cover the two questions that matter after 40.

Is the WHOOP band free?
The band is included with the membership. You pay for the membership, not the hardware.
Can I cancel WHOOP?
New members typically sign up annually. Check the current terms at checkout.
Does WHOOP count steps?
Its focus is recovery, strain and sleep, not steps. I track my 10,000+ steps separately.
Is WHOOP accurate?
For trends in resting heart rate, HRV and sleep timing it’s useful. No wrist wearable is perfect. Watch the trend, not one night.
Is WHOOP a medical device?
Treat it as a wellness tool. Anything worrying goes to your GP.
Which tier do you recommend?
One or Peak for most men. Life only if you specifically want its extra heart features.
