A note before we start. This article is general wellness education, not medical advice. Metabolic age is a consumer wellness estimate, not a medical diagnosis. Supplements and body composition scales are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Where LifeWave X39 is mentioned on this site, it is a non-transdermal, general-wellness phototherapy patch that gently stimulates the skin with light to support the body’s natural energy flow for strength and stamina — not a treatment. Speak to your doctor before changing your training, diet, or supplements.
You step on a smart scale at 48 and it tells you that you are 56. Now what?
Few numbers get a man’s attention like metabolic age. Body fat percentage is abstract. “Your body is running eight years older than your passport” is not. It is a brilliant motivator — and a widely misunderstood one.
So here is what the number actually is, how far to trust it, and the short list of things that move it in the right direction.
Key takeaways
- Metabolic age compares your estimated resting metabolism with the average for people of different ages.
- There is no single medical formula. Each brand calculates it its own way.
- It is driven mostly by how much muscle and how much fat you carry.
- Treat it as a trend indicator, not a diagnosis. Direction matters more than the exact figure.
- To lower it: build muscle, lose fat, eat enough protein, and stay active.
What is metabolic age?
It starts with your basal metabolic rate (BMR): the energy your body burns at rest just to stay alive. A body composition scale estimates your BMR from your weight, height, sex and, crucially, your lean mass. It then compares that figure with the average BMR for different age groups. If your BMR matches the average 40-year-old’s, your metabolic age is 40, whatever your birth certificate says.
Is metabolic age accurate?
Be clear-eyed about this. Metabolic age is not a standardised clinical measurement. The comparison data and formulas are proprietary, so two brands can give the same man different ages. It is also not the same thing as biological age measured from blood or DNA markers.
What it is good for is tracking your own direction on the same device. If your number goes from 56 to 51 to 47 across a year, something real has changed in your body composition. That is worth knowing, even if the absolute figure is an estimate.
Why is my metabolic age higher than my real age?
Almost always for one reason: less muscle and more fat than the average person of your age. Muscle is metabolically active tissue. Fat is far less so. As muscle drifts down through your forties and fifties — the slow process behind sarcopenia — your resting burn drops with it. A high metabolic age is usually a muscle message. Interestingly, the large-scale research suggests metabolism itself does not slow much in midlife. Your composition does.
How do you lower your metabolic age?
Four levers, in order of impact:
- Build and keep muscle. Resistance training three to four times a week. Nothing else moves the number as reliably.
- Lose fat without losing muscle. A modest deficit, not a crash diet. Here is how.
- Feed the muscle. 30–40g of protein per meal to get past anabolic resistance.
- Move all day. Steps, stairs, standing. Daily movement supports both fat loss and muscle sensitivity.
Which scale do I use to track it?
I use the Hume Body Pod once a month. It is a smart scale with a handheld bar that sends a signal through the whole body, not just the legs, and estimates body fat, skeletal muscle mass, visceral fat, body water and resting metabolism, with the history stored in the app. That history is the point. One reading tells you little. Twelve readings tell you a story. My own numbers are in my four-month progress report.
Where does protein supplementation fit?
Since muscle is what drives the number, anything that helps you hold muscle helps here. Food comes first. On top of it I take BodyHealth PerfectAmino, an essential amino acid formula — five tablets fasted in the morning and five later in the day. It delivers the amino acids muscle needs with almost no calories, which is useful when you are trying to trim fat and protect muscle at the same time. It will not lower your metabolic age by itself. Training does that. It supports the training.

How fast can the number change?
Slowly, because muscle is built slowly. Give it three months before judging, measure under the same conditions each time, and watch the trend. A man who lifts consistently, eats his protein and walks daily will usually see it move within a season.

What is a good metabolic age?
At or below your actual age. Lower generally reflects more muscle and less fat than average for your age group.
Is metabolic age the same as biological age?
No. Metabolic age is estimated from resting metabolism and body composition. Biological age is usually estimated from blood or DNA markers.
How is metabolic age calculated?
Your estimated basal metabolic rate is compared with average rates for different age groups. Each manufacturer uses its own formula and reference data.
Can I lower my metabolic age?
Yes. Building muscle and reducing body fat are the two changes that most directly affect it.
Why did my metabolic age change overnight?
Hydration, food and time of day affect scale readings. Measure under the same conditions and judge the monthly trend, not single readings.
Do I need a special scale to measure it?
You need a body composition scale. Standard bathroom scales measure weight only.
