They’re usually wrong — not because dehydration is hard to detect, but because the signs are genuinely different from what most people expect.

Here’s a practical guide to reading the signals your body is actually sending.

The most reliable indicator: urine colour

Urine colour is the most accessible and most accurate real-time hydration indicator available without any equipment. Pale straw yellow to light yellow means you’re adequately hydrated. Dark yellow or amber means your kidneys are concentrating urine to conserve fluid — you need more water. Completely clear means you may be over-hydrating and flushing electrolytes.

Check it twice a day: first thing in the morning (naturally more concentrated after overnight) and mid-afternoon (when daily dehydration typically peaks). If mid-afternoon urine is consistently dark, your morning habits are the primary place to intervene.

The cognitive signals

Mild dehydration at 1-2% fluid loss — a level that doesn’t trigger noticeable thirst in most adults — produces measurable cognitive effects. These include difficulty concentrating or sustaining attention, mildly reduced short-term memory and working memory, increased perception of task difficulty, and mild irritability or low mood.
