The “8 glasses a day” rule is one of the most persistent health myths in circulation. It has no solid scientific basis, ignores virtually every variable that determines individual water needs, and leads some people to under-drink and others to over-drink without either group actually being better hydrated.

Here’s what the evidence actually says about how much water you should drink — and why the answer is more nuanced than any single number.

Where the “8 glasses” myth came from

The 8×8 rule (eight 8-ounce glasses daily) appears to have originated from a 1945 US Food and Nutrition Board recommendation that people consume 2.5 litres of water per day — a recommendation that included a sentence immediately following it noting that most of this water would come from food. That sentence was consistently dropped in retelling. The myth propagated from there.

Heinz Valtin’s 2002 review in the American Journal of Physiology examined the scientific evidence for the 8×8 rule and found essentially none. The number, he concluded, was not backed by any published scientific study.

What determines your actual water needs

Body size. A larger body has more cells requiring hydration. Water needs scale roughly with body weight — approximately 35ml per kg of body weight per day is a common clinical starting point.

Activity level. Exercise significantly increases fluid loss through sweat. A sedentary adult and an adult who exercises 90 minutes daily have dramatically different fluid requirements, even at the same body weight.

Climate. Heat and humidity increase insensible fluid loss through skin and breath. Cold, dry environments also increase respiratory fluid loss, though without the sweat signal that prompts drinking in summer.

Diet composition. High water content foods — fruits, vegetables, soups — contribute meaningfully to fluid intake. A whole-food diet may provide 1-1.5 litres of water daily through food alone. A processed food diet provides much less.

Protein and caffeine intake. High protein diets increase kidney filtration demands and require more water for nitrogen waste excretion. Caffeine is a mild diuretic and depletes magnesium. Both increase needs above the baseline.

Age. The thirst mechanism becomes less reliable with age. Adults over 40 — particularly over 60 — are progressively less able to rely on thirst as an accurate hydration signal and need to drink to a schedule rather than sensation.

The most practical guidance

The European Food Safety Authority guidelines suggest 2 litres per day for women and 2.5 litres for men from all sources. The US National Academies suggest slightly higher: 2.7 litres for women and 3.7 litres for men total, including food. These are adequate starting points — but urine colour is a more personalised indicator than any fixed number. Pale straw yellow throughout the day means you’re in the right range. Darker means drink more. Completely clear means you may be over-drinking and diluting your electrolytes.
