A note before we start. This is general information, not medical advice. Check with your GP or pharmacist before starting supplements, especially if you take medication (for example blood thinners) or have kidney, heart or other conditions. LifeWave X39 is a non-transdermal, general-wellness phototherapy patch that gently stimulates the skin with light to support the body’s natural energy flow for strength and stamina. It is not a supplement and not a treatment.
Most supplements are a waste of money. A small number have solid evidence, and for men over 40 a well-chosen few can help fill real gaps. Here are the ones worth considering, and how to use them sensibly.
Key takeaways
- Food, training and sleep come first. Supplements fill gaps.
- The best-supported options: enough protein, creatine, vitamin D, omega-3 and magnesium.
- Stick to sensible doses; more isn’t better.
- A GP blood test helps you target real deficiencies.
1. Protein and essential amino acids
After 40 muscles respond less to the same protein (anabolic resistance), so getting enough matters. Food first. I also take 10 PerfectAmino tablets a day — five fasted in the morning, five later — on top of whole-food protein.
2. Creatine
One of the most researched supplements there is, with good evidence for strength and muscle. The common dose is 3–5g of creatine monohydrate daily; I take 10g. Check with your GP first if you have kidney problems. More in creatine: not just for muscle.
3. Vitamin D
Low vitamin D is common in northern countries, especially in winter. In Ireland and the UK, the general advice is 10µg (400 IU) a day in autumn and winter, and adults shouldn’t exceed 100µg (4,000 IU) a day without medical advice. Some products pair it with vitamin K2; evidence for the combination is limited, and K2 can interact with warfarin. See vitamin D after 40.
4. Omega-3
Oily fish once or twice a week is the first step. Supplements are an option if you don’t eat fish, but high-dose omega-3 supplements have been linked to a higher risk of atrial fibrillation, so talk to your GP before taking large doses. See omega-3 after 40.
5. Magnesium
Involved in muscle, nerve and energy processes, and commonly under-consumed. Glycinate or citrate forms are well tolerated; many people take it in the evening. Keep supplements within the label dose and upper limit, and avoid them with kidney disease unless your doctor advises. See magnesium after 40.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need supplements if I eat well?
Possibly a few. Vitamin D is hard to get from food in winter, and many people eat little oily fish. Food still comes first.
Should I get a blood test first?
It’s sensible, especially for vitamin D, iron and B12. Ask your GP.
What’s a waste of money?
Most “testosterone boosters”, fat burners and proprietary blends that hide their doses.
Does X39 treat any condition?
No. No such claim is made. X39 is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
