The short answer most people want is: yes, tap water in developed countries is generally safe in the sense that it won’t make you acutely ill. The longer answer — the one that actually matters for your health — is considerably more complicated.

Legal and safe are not the same thing. Tap water is regulated to prevent immediate harm. It is not regulated to prevent long-term, low-level exposure to compounds that accumulate in the body over years. Understanding the difference between those two things changes how you think about what comes out of your tap.

What tap water legally contains

In the US, the EPA sets maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) for around 90 contaminants. The Environmental Working Group tracks over 300 contaminants that have been detected in US water systems — most of which have no legal limit at all. Legal absence of a limit is not the same as absence of risk.

The most significant concerns in current research include PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, known as forever chemicals), nitrates from agricultural runoff, microplastics, pharmaceutical residues, disinfection byproducts from chlorination, heavy metals including lead from aging pipes, and pesticide residues including glyphosate and atrazine.

PFAS: the forever chemical problem

PFAS are synthetic chemicals used in non-stick cookware, food packaging, firefighting foam, and hundreds of industrial applications. They don’t break down in the environment or in the body — hence “forever chemicals.” They accumulate in blood, liver, kidneys, and thyroid tissue over time.

In 2024, the EPA set the first-ever legal limits for six PFAS compounds in drinking water — acknowledging that existing exposure levels carry meaningful health risk. Studies have linked PFAS exposure to immune suppression, thyroid disruption, certain cancers, and developmental harm in children. An estimated 45% of US tap water contains at least one PFAS compound above the new EPA health advisory level.

Lead: an old problem that hasn’t gone away

There is no safe level of lead exposure. The US still has an estimated 9 million lead service lines delivering water to homes. Testing is inconsistent, and the legal limit of 15 parts per billion was set based on what was achievable in 1991, not based on what’s actually safe. The CDC acknowledges there is no safe blood lead level, particularly for children.

What this means practically

It means that whether your tap water is “safe” depends heavily on where you live, how old your pipes are, what agricultural or industrial activity occurs nearby, and what your water utility tests for and reports. It’s the most useful starting point for understanding your actual exposure.

Filtration matters — but the type of filtration matters equally. Standard carbon filters remove chlorine and some organic compounds. They do not remove PFAS, nitrates, heavy metals, or pharmaceutical residues effectively. Reverse osmosis removes the vast majority of all of these. Understanding what you’re filtering for determines what filter you actually need.

How do I find out what’s in my tap water?

Your water utility is legally required to publish an annual Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) listing detected contaminants and their levels against legal limits. However, these reports only cover regulated contaminants and compare against legal limits rather than health-based guidelines. The EWG Tap Water Database (ewg.org/tapwater) allows you to search by zip code and see detected contaminants compared against health-based guidelines, which are often significantly stricter than legal limits.

Is filtered water always better than tap water?

Not automatically. Filtration removes contaminants but also removes beneficial minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium — particularly aggressive filtration like reverse osmosis. Mineral-stripped water consumed in large volumes can impair cellular hydration by disrupting the electrolyte gradients needed for water to cross cell membranes. The optimal approach is filtration with remineralisation — remove the harmful compounds, then replace the minerals your cells need.
