Editor’s note. The original audio for this episode repeated some company claims about LifeWave X2O as if they were established. I’ve taken the audio down and corrected the transcript below. Pip: Simply Younger Journal is asking the questions your doctor probably skips — like whether the water you’re drinking is doing its job, or whether your body is ageing faster than your calendar suggests.

Mara: Dave’s been working through all of it this week — hydration, the evidence behind light-based products, and the daily habits that actually move the needle. Let’s start with the water.

What your water is — and isn’t — doing

Pip: Most hydration advice stops at volume. But volume, minerals, water quality and daily habits all play a part.

Mara: The Code of Hydration quiz covers those four areas. Electrolytes matter too: water and minerals work together to keep fluid balance right.

Pip: And water quality?

Mara: A 2023 US Geological Survey study detected at least one PFAS compound in roughly 45% of tap water samples tested. Detected isn’t the same as dangerous, but legal compliance and ideal aren’t always the same standard either. See is tap water safe?

Mara: There’s an age angle too: total body water tends to fall with age, and thirst becomes a less reliable signal. Brain fog and afternoon slumps can sometimes be a hydration issue.

Pip: Then there’s LifeWave’s X2O. LifeWave founder David Schmidt has described a mechanism where light is held in “coherent domains” in water.

Mara: That’s a company explanation drawing on fringe theories, not accepted physics. The studies he mentions are company studies, not independent controlled trials. The filtration is the sensible part; hydrogen water is early research; the light step is unproven. See Schmidt’s explanation, examined.

Pip: And the honest framing on LifeWave generally — some distributors overclaim, and the income opportunity is realistic for very few people. See is LifeWave a scam?

Why energy declines — and what to do about it

Pip: The longevity posts argue that a lot of what we call ageing is a set of processes that respond to lifestyle.

Mara: As mitochondria age, they tend to produce energy less efficiently and generate more reactive oxygen species. NAD+ levels also tend to decline with age. See mitochondria after 40.

Mara: Chronic low-grade inflammation — “inflammaging” — and senescent cells add to the picture. See inflammaging. The foundation is the same in every post: sleep, exercise and good nutrition before anything else.

Habits, discipline and the morning window

Pip: How you structure the first hours of the day, and whether your routines are built to last, shapes most of the outcome.

Mara: Disciplined people tend to rely less on willpower and more on environment, identity and small habits. BJ Fogg’s Tiny Habits work suggests starting smaller than feels useful.

Pip: Knowing why something works — and measuring whether it’s working — is what separates a protocol from a hope.

Mara: More of that next time.

I’m the founder of Simply Younger. I turned 50 this year and I’m in the best shape of my life: lifting every second day, 10,000+ steps, cold plunges and sauna, and a monthly body scan to keep me honest. I’m not a doctor. I document what actually works for men over 40, mistakes included.
