A note before we start. I earn commission on X2O, not on RO systems. Prices and specs change; check current data. Neither product is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

If you have a reverse osmosis (RO) system, or are weighing one up, you may wonder whether LifeWave’s X2O replaces it or adds anything. Here’s a straight answer.

Key takeaways

  • Certified RO is the benchmark for removing a wide range of contaminants.
  • RO removes minerals too; many people use remineralisation or simply get minerals from food.
  • X2O has its own filters; check its certified performance for your specific contaminants.
  • X2O adds hydrogen (early research) and light infusion (unproven).
  • For clean water on a budget, RO wins comfortably.

What RO does

A properly certified RO system removes a broad range of contaminants, including lead, nitrates, fluoride and many PFAS. It usually needs plumbing and produces some waste water. It also removes minerals; most of your minerals come from food, but some people prefer remineralised water.

What X2O does

According to LifeWave, X2O filters water, adds hydrogen, and applies a patented light-infusion step. Its filtration is a different design from RO; compare the certified data for the contaminants that matter in your water. Hydrogen water research is early; light infusion has no independent evidence. See inside the X2O.

Do you need both?

No. If your goal is clean water, a certified RO or targeted filter does that for far less. If you already own an X2O and want maximum filtration, you can feed it water the manual allows. Don’t buy X2O expecting better “cellular hydration” than clean water — there’s no evidence for that.

Cost

A quality under-sink RO system typically costs a fraction of X2O’s price, plus filter changes. X2O is premium-priced with its own filter costs. See X2O price.

Frequently asked questions

Does X2O replace an RO filter?

Not necessarily. Compare certified filtration data for your water. For broad contaminant removal, certified RO is the benchmark.

Can I use RO water in X2O?

Check the manual’s approved water types.

Does RO water hydrate as well as X2O water?

There’s no evidence X2O water hydrates better than clean water. Hydration comes from drinking enough.

Do either treat any condition?

No.
